GAMBLE WITH FATE.COM
The Lord of the Underworld ran his fingers over the sleek, black wood table that sat at the side of his chamber, his eyes drawn to the centre of the room in which a bright, green light glowed brightly. It wasn’t just an effect, it was a portal, his access to all the souls that he had taken. When they died, they went to him and he watched over them for eternity. Usually, once a soul had left its body, they were of no use to him. He simply watched them, and the new souls that came to him every single day. But Hades was in need of a helping hand and he knew just the person for the job. “Master.” He turned to find one of his demon followers stood in the doorway, clutching a small, golden medallion in his hand. He crossed the room and handed it to his master with a small bow, wondering just what he needed it for. Hades did things without telling anyone, expecting them to follow him without question. The Lord of the Underworld moved towards the source of the green light, holding out the medallion. It seemed to react with the light, glowing a bright red colour that seemed to fill the whole chamber and the demon found he had to close his eyes to avoid being blinded by its intensity. When he opened his eyes again, he and Hades were not alone. Before the Lord of the Underworld stood a figure with is back to him. It appeared to be male from the slender taper of the chest and the slimness of his hips, but the only part of him the demon could see was a mass of light-blond curls that fell to the figure’s backside. Eventually, Hades glanced at the demon over the new arrival’s shoulder, a smile flitting across his face briefly before he spoke. “You may go.” Hades waited until the demon had left before turning back to the young man before him, who watched him with eyes of such icy blue intensity that it made him smile. He remembered when the man had first fallen into death, how hard it had been to let his soul go along with the others when he just wanted to possess him. “Chance,” he spoke finally, his long, tapered fingers toying with the medallion, “I assume you know why I’ve brought you back.” The young man’s eyes were drawn to the medallion, but he tore his gaze away, looking around the chamber slowly. “You wish to make a deal.” The Lord of the Underworld laughed, sliding his hand across Chance’s shoulder, leading him towards one side of the chamber where a section had been cut out of the rock. It allowed Hades to look out upon his realm from high above. “Out of all the souls that I keep here, I can think of no one better for this job. Knowing your past, how you lived your life, you are perfect.” As beautiful and young as Chance looked, he was a brutal killer. In life, his father had been the ruler of such a powerful kingdom and when he had died, Chance had taken his place, happy to wear the crown and the title of King. He hadn’t made any false promises, he played no sly games, he had simply pursued his goal of domination until the day he died. He had succeeded for the most part, commanding his armies to take over kingdoms to the north and south of his realm. Many good men had fallen under his unstoppable army until he ruled almost everything in the continent in which he lived. But Chance had been unlucky. One night, he had been betrayed by the man who he cared for the most, the man who had taught him everything he knew. It was that betrayal that lead to his death and the fall of his kingdom. Hades had been fascinated with him when he had descended to the underworld, wondering just how someone so young could have been so powerful. He had only been nineteen when he took the throne and by his death at age twenty-two, he was one of the most powerful people in the world. People fell to their knees before him, admiring his resolve, his sheer power and his beauty. Men found themselves lost in his icy blue eyes, too easily ensnared by such a smooth, young body that they were beneath his power in mere moments. “What do you ask of me?” Chance asked, looking the God in the eye and straightening up. Hades reached to caress his pale cheek, tilting the lovely face up slightly. “There’s a man I have in mind.” he said, a strange look passing his features, “Times have changed since you ruled, humans have moved on and advanced in so many ways. This man has developed a way to keep people going, stop their souls departing their bodies and coming to me. Of course, I can’t let this happen.” Chance nodded. “You wish for me to kill him.” The Lord of the Underworld nodded, moving away from the young man to cross the room, once more picking up the medallion from where he had laid it on his table. “If you succeed, you’ll get this.” he said, holding it up and enjoying the way Chance’s eyes were drawn to it. “You know what this is, and what it means.” The blond nodded, tearing his eyes away before frowning. “Why do you need me for this relatively simple task?” Hades slipped the medallion into his pocket and waved his hands in front of him until a distortion grew between them. It shimmered in the air, swirling in darkness for a few moments before an image formed in the centre. It showed a tall man dressed in a lab coat with dark, unruly curls and bright green eyes. He wore glasses, which he pushed back up onto his nose as he studied the paper he held in his hands. “He has a guardian.” Hades explained, staring at the image before it suddenly vanished. “A man with superior skills and intellect, trained so perfectly that no one can get past him.” Chance nodded then. “I see what you’re asking of me, Hades. Very well, I accept.” “Excellent!” Hades moved closer to the young man, grasping his hands tightly in his own. A few moments later, Chance began to feel a rush of energy coursing through him that made him gasp softly. It felt good, the first true feeling he had had in a long time. “I’ve gifted you with some powers.” the God explained with a slight nod of his head. “Each rooted in the darkness that you so crave. The darker your heart, the stronger the powers will be. Do not fail me.” Chance nodded. “I will not fail again.” It was minutes later when Chance stepped on solid ground for the first time since he had died. Things had changed- the world had grown and technology ruled the masses, but he knew the humans would still be the same. They would still have fear deep in their hearts and it was that fear that controlled them. Chance had learned to overcome fear when he was a child and it was for that reason that the changed world didn’t scare him. Things changed, it was inevitable, but more often than not, people didn’t. Hades had sent him to the exact town, the exact street in fact, where the target in question lived. Chance had materialised outside a tall building that seemed to stretch up to the sky, full of long, plain windows and endless floors. The sign over the main door seemed to indicate that it was a building meant for medical research and Chance found himself vaguely interested as he pushed open the door and stepped inside. Medicine had been simple in his time, just enough to get by on, but it seemed it had advanced beyond belief, especially if they’d come up with a way to stop people dying. There were people in the reception as he entered, all of whom regarded him with strange looks as he paused, his eyes scanning the area. He stood out from them with his mass of blond curls and his different clothes, but it didn’t bother him in the slightest. “Can I help you?” A woman rose from behind the reception desk, crossing the room to look at him inquisitively. He frowned at her pants, wondering just when women had been allowed to wear men’s clothes. “No you cannot.” he answered, suddenly clutching her around the neck with pale, slender fingers. It took mere seconds for the darkness to flow into her and he let her go, not watching as her body collapsed to the floor, twitching uncontrollably. Chance heard screams around him, but he ignored them, approaching a man who stood next to the reception desk, frozen in fear. “Where’s the doctor?” he asked, grasping the man’s shirt and pulling him closer. “Where’s the one with his miracle cure that stops people dying?” The man was frozen and Chance’s frown deepened. “I’m going to give you five seconds, and then you’ll be like her.” Evidently, the threat hit home and the man turned scared eyes to his face, his body shaking in fear. “The…t…top floor.” he stammered. “He’s on the t...t…t…top floor.” Chance sighed, not wanting to climb all the stairs, since the building had seemed endless. “Show me how to get there.” he demanded and the man nodded, waiting until Chance released him before he scurried over to the elevator, stepping inside and pressing himself up to the back wall as the blond entered. “What is this?” Chance asked, staring at his reflection in the mirror, then turning quickly as the man pressed the button for the top floor. “It’s an e…e…el….elevator.” Chance just frowned and then suddenly shoved the man as the doors slid closed, leaving him in the reception. The blond had never had patience for incompetent idiots and it seemed that that had never changed. Chance studied the elevator as it rose to the top floor, wondering how it worked and just what was pulling it. It was quite fascinating and he was glad that it meant he had no need for the stairs. Walking up so many flights to reach the top floor and being even slightly out of breath would be so undignified. He was glad when the doors finally slid open and he stepped into the corridor, his eyes falling upon a door at the end of the long stretch of pure white. It seemed like the logical place for the good doctor to be and he strode towards it quickly, rather hoping to get on with his task and report back to Hades to fetch his medallion. The medallion meant his freedom, no longer a slave to death and Hades himself but once more a human being who walked the Earth. But this time, it would be different. Chance pushed open the door and stepped inside, his eyes immediately falling on the man who sat hunched over a work bench at the far end of the room, seemingly absorbed in his papers. It was all too easy, but Chance approached his target all the same, pausing only when the man finally heard his footsteps and turned to him with an annoyed looked on his face. “Can’t you see I’m busy?” he asked. “I have far too much work to…” He cut off when he noticed the look on Chance’s face and he visibly paled, green eyes sliding over to the door off to the side of the room as he got to his feet. “Can I help you with anything?” he asked Chance, but the blond just stepped closer, backing the man up against his work desk. He reached for the dagger hanging from his belt, withdrawing it slowly before pressing it against the doctor’s neck. He was about to end the man’s life when he heard the sound of a door handle from behind him. “Andy, I got the things you asked for and…” Chance whirled round at the sound of such a familiar voice, finding himself looking at a face from his past, one he knew very well. He had run his fingers through the flaming red hair, kissed the flawless skin, stared into the exotic, dark eyes on many an occasion. But that was all in the past. The man standing before him was the very one responsible for his death. The man in question looked so utterly shocked to see him that he almost laughed, but he was too angry for that. “How…how is this possible?” “You should know, Terra,” Chance replied, his eyes narrowing with anger, “That only the good die young and stay gone forever.” Terra continued to stare in disbelief at what he was seeing and Chance slid the dagger back into its holder, knowing that it just wouldn’t do. The man before him deserved a long and painful death, deserved to pay the price for betraying his king and his lover. “Am I missing something here?” Andy asked as Chance circled the red haired man, looking him over completely. “He just tried to kill me, what did I do?” “Stay back.” Terra replied, turning to the blond and making sure he was between the two of them. “This man is a cold and ruthless killer…and he’s supposed to have been dead for nearly four hundred years.” A small smile passed Chance’s lips. “I could say the same for you, Terra. You never told me you weren’t human.” “I never told you a lot of things, Chance.” The blond frowned, grabbing Terra by a handful of his red hair and yanking his head back at a painful angle. “That’s Your Highness to you. You may have betrayed me and ended my life, but I’m still your King.” He didn’t know why Terra didn’t pull away, but the anger on the red head’s face soon softened into a look of acceptance. “You’re right, Your Highness. I suppose I owe you an explanation.” Chance released his former teacher, turning his gaze instead to Andy, who was staring at them with a look of utter confusion on his face. His glasses slid down his nose and he shoved them back up with a finger, before scratching his head. “What is going on here?” he demanded. “I was just here working when this man barges in and tries to kill me. Terra…who is he?” The red haired man’s eyes met with Chance’s for the longest time, then he suddenly grasped the blond’s wrist and yanked him towards the door he had entered through. He closed it behind them with some force, pushing Chance into the centre of the room. “How did you get back?” he asked, still in disbelief at who was stood before him. Killing Chance had been the hardest thing he’d ever had to do, but he had done it for the good of the kingdom and the world. Even after four centuries, what he had done still plagued him, especially in his dreams. Chance smiled slightly, moving to perch on the edge of the desk sat in the room, examining his fingernails for a few moments before he answered. It was how he always had been- incredulously frustrating. “I made a little deal with Hades.” he answered finally. “My freedom in return for that doctor’s life. Hades told me he had a bodyguard- I never expected it to be you.” Terra sighed deeply. “I can’t let you do that. He’s a good man, Chance. He just wants to help people.” The blond didn’t answer, just toyed with a long strand of golden hair, wrapping it around his slender fingers. Even after what Terra had done to him, he wasn’t sure if he could hate the man. Terra was the only thing that kept him human when he had so much power, the thing that reminded him that he wasn’t all bad. In times when he stood looking at the remains of an empire that had fallen under his power, wondering how much of a monster he was, Terra had always been there for him. Their love had been so intense that he wasn’t sure that it would ever end. Even so, the one man he had dared to love had betrayed him, ending his life with his own hands when he was just twenty two years old, dooming him to follow all those whose deaths he was responsible for. “I owe you the truth, Chance.” Terra spoke up, his eyes trailing over the other’s form. He’d almost forgotten how beautiful his lover was over the years. The darkness surrounding the blond had obscured his memory of him, making him seem more ugly than he truly was. He moved closer to the blond, reaching out to lay a hand on his shoulder and he watched the icy eyes turn towards him. “Yes, you do.” “Chance?” Terra entered the halls of the King’s palace, finding it in complete darkness. The light of the moon filtered in through the window on the far end of the room and Terra saw a silhouette against the brightness. Chance stood staring out at the night sky. As Terra drew closer, he saw that the blond was only dressed in a thin robe and it made him feel even worse about what he had to do. Chance was so enchantingly beautiful that he was almost tempted to abandon his plans, but he knew it had to be done. The King had become too cruel and too powerful- in the end he would destroy himself with his desire to rule everything. It was only after the first few years of Chance’s reign that Terra had become aware of a resistance within the city. They were opposed to what their monarch was doing and worked to come up with a way to stop him before things got too far. What they stood for made sense and before long, Terra found himself at one of their meetings, secreting himself beneath a dark, hooded robe. The things they spoke of made it clear that Chance had to be stopped and that he was the only one who could get close enough to do it. He had agonized over the decision for the longest time, wondering just how he could kill the man he loved. He’d seen Chance grow from a quiet, little boy into a strong, fearless leader, but he missed how the blond had been before the power had gone to his head. They had spent so many good times together, but as Chance took over more and more cities, he had less time for love. Eventually, Terra made the decision. He had to stop him. The red head silently approached the King, frowning when he turned to him with such a sad look on his face. It had been a long time since Chance had shown any feelings- he’d begun to wonder if he had them anymore. “What’s wrong?” Terra asked, slipping his arms around the blond’s shoulders to pull him into a light embrace. Chance’s body still felt so good within his arms and he almost cried at the thought that it would be the last time he would hold him so. “It’s nothing.” the King replied, sliding an arm around Terra’s waist. Despite everything he was and everything he had done, Chance had a softer side- a side that liked human contact. It almost made him forget sometimes that he had such a ruthless side. It was the side that everyone else saw, only he knew this Chance, his Chance. The blond opened his mouth to speak, but Terra dipped his head, pressing the softest of kisses to his lips, enjoying the way the icy blue eyes locked with his own. He stroked the pale cheek before pressing another kiss to his lips, pulling the slender body tighter against his own. The feel of Chance against him almost made him forget his agenda and he slipped his hand beneath the fold of the robe the other wore, stroking fingers over the impossibly soft skin of his stomach. “This is unexpected.” the blond said when they finally drew apart, toying with a lock of Terra’s hair. The red head just smiled at him, slipping hands down his back. “You never have any time any more. I thought I would take the opportunity as it’s presented to me.” Chance wound a lock of Terra’s hair around his hand, pulling him down for a passionate kiss. He took the opportunity to rub his body against his lover’s, eliciting sparks of arousal between them. It wasn’t long before his hands were plucking at Terra’s clothes, eager to bare his body before him. He came close to uncovering the dagger that was secreted away in his clothing, but he missed it and Terra let out a sigh of relief. He smiled softly as Chance raised his hands to pluck at the fastening of his robe and he let it slip off his shoulders until it pooled on the floor at his feet. Terra couldn’t help but stare at the body bared for him- all creamy skin and long limbs, surrounded by the fall of beautiful blond curls. In that moment, stood with the moon shining behind him, Chance had never looked more enchanting and it made the red head’s heart ache within his chest. Terra moved forward to sink his fingers into the mass of blond hair, loving the feel of it beneath his touch. He stroked hands down the length of it, pausing at the end of the long strands to slide fingers over Chance’s bare buttocks. He cupped one in each hand, squeezing the perfect flesh and watching the way the blond’s eyes went half lidded. “Where are all your servants?” he asked, worried about anyone walking in on them before he was finished. “Working.” came the reply. “They always have work to do. Too busy to stand around watching what we do.” Terra smiled sliding one of his hands around Chance’s hip to wrap around his half hard cock. “Good.” He stroked slowly, wishing to savour their last moments together. He loved Chance so much that it hurt and it was that feeling that made him realize that what he was doing was right. Chance had changed and he would continue to change as his power grew. He wished he could end his own life along with the other’s, die together like star-crossed lovers, but he couldn’t. He wasn’t human, he couldn’t die. At least…not yet. Terra pressed a kiss to Chance’s lips as he lowered him to the smooth, white floor, pressing his body on top of him. The way they were positioned gave him the perfect opportunity to slide his length against the blond’s and he did so slowly, savouring the jolt of pleasure that coursed through him. Chance let out the softest of noises, pushing his fingers into Terra’s hair as the man bent to lick at his nipples, catching them between his teeth and tugging gently. Lately, the blond had begun asking him to be more aggressive, more violent in bed, but he always felt so uncomfortable with it. That night was exactly how he wanted it- slow and gentle and utterly passionate. “I love you.” he whispered, lowering his head to press kisses to the side of Chance’s neck, knowing it was a particular erogenous zone for him. He skimmed his hands down the sides of the slender body until he could hook his fingers beneath the blond’s knees, raising them until his feet were pressed on the floor, his legs spread wide. “Stay.” Terra told his King, shifting backwards towards his pile of clothing. He moved it closer to where Chance lay, knowing he would need access to the dagger he had hidden away and it gave him the chance to root around in one of his pockets for the small bottle of lotion that he always carried. Chance had grown up with sword fighting and it meant he often had stiff, aching fingers or rough calluses. Terra loved nothing more than sitting down with his lover pressed close against him, massaging the lotion into his beautiful hands. He poured some of the lotion into his hand and returned to Chance, who was watching him with a lustful look in his eye. “You always did like to torture me.” the blond commented with a wry smile, parting his legs further to allow Terra to settle between them. He was given a smile in response and a soft kiss before Terra trailed his hand down his lover’s inner thigh, setting the skin tingling. Chance bit his lip as the finger circled his entrance, teasing him impossibly. He was tempted to move, to force Terra to take him, but he knew that wasn’t what he wanted that night. So he simply lay, his head back against the smooth floor and his hair splayed around him as Terra finally pressed a finger into his body. It seemed to take forever for the red head to prepare his lover. He always started off with one finger, and then two, scissoring them inside of the blond so he wouldn’t hurt him. They had made love enough times for Chance to be used to it, but Terra continued all the same, being so utterly gentle, even when the King craved something a bit more aggressive. By the time Terra was done preparing him, Chance was laying with his eyes closed tightly, his chest rising and falling heavily as he panted. His cock was so hard that it hurt and he was desperate for the red head to stop torturing him and do something. When he cracked his eyes open, he found Terra over him, holding himself up with one hand as the other slicked the lotion onto his erection. “You are so beautiful.” Terra told his King, shifting his body until the head of his cock was pressed against Chance’s opening. The blond looked up at him beneath long lashes. “Shut up and take me.” “As you wish, Your Highness.” Terra lifted Chance’s legs and began to press against him until the head of his erection broke through the initial barrier of resistance. He slid his length in smoothly, watching the look on the blond’s face- a look of pure ecstasy. When he was fully seated, he lowered his body, resting his elbows on the floor either side of Chance’s shoulders and capturing the blond’s lips in a gentle kiss as he allowed him time to get used to the feel of being filled. As usual, it didn’t take long before long legs raised to wrap around his thighs, pushing him in deeper. “Move.” Chance commanded with a soft moan, raising arms to wrap around Terra’s shoulders. He couldn’t hold back his moans as the red head did begin to move, sliding first out and then back into the tightness of his body. The room was so silent save for the sounds of their love making- passionate moans and gasps and the sound of their bodies coming together. Terra couldn’t help it. As he slowly took his lover, he could feel the tears stinging at his eyes, knowing that it was the last time he would be able to be with Chance. “Are you crying?” the blond asked, a confused look on his face that only made Terra feel worse. Chance was always so hard and emotionless, but during their love making was the only time when he saw his true self, the one without all the desire for power. When they were together, he could forget all the horrible things Chance had done and concentrate on just the two of them. “I love you.” Terra told him as he increased the pace of his thrusts, gasping softly every time he reached the perfect spot inside of his lover. He angled his thrusts to skim over Chance’s prostate, enjoying the way he moaned and threw back his head. “No matter what happens, I love you.” “What…what are you talking about?” Terra just pressed a finger to his lips, silencing him as he continued to thrust, sinking so impossibly deep inside the other. Fingers groped at his back, sliding over the slickness of his skin as they scrabbled for purchase. Chance was always so passionate during their love making, it was truly a beautiful sight to behold. It was that sight that he knew would be burned onto his memory for eternity. Terra could feel his control slipping and he slowed his thrusts, trying to draw out their time together and delay the inevitable. He failed miserably as it was mere moments before he could feel himself fall over the edge, spinning down into the depths of climax. He let out a hoarse cry as he spilled his seed into Chance’s body, burying his cock as deep as he could. He stayed within his lover as he wrapped a hand around his length, coaxing him to follow him into release. It was easy enough to get Chance to slip over the edge and he arched his back as he came, his mouth open in a silent cry. Terra felt the fluids spilling over his hand as he continued to stroke, pulling the entirety of his orgasm out of the younger man. The blond finally collapsed back against the floor, utterly out of breath with his head on one side and his eyes closed. Terra stroked his cheek with one finger as he slipped out of his lover’s body, his hand groping around in the pile of clothing for the dagger. He paused for the longest time with both hands wrapped around the handle, staring down at Chance as he lay. “Just know that I always love you, Chance.” he whispered softly before he suddenly brought the dagger down swiftly, piercing the heart of the man he loved most in the entire world. Chance was silent as Terra recounted his tale and by the time he was finished, he could feel the tears at the corners of his eyes. He lowered his head, wiping evidence of his emotions away with the back of his hand. “You see why I had to do it.” the red head said, stepping closer to the blond. He dared to slip his arms around the smaller figure, sighing as Chance rested his head on his shoulder. “I can’t forgive you for what you have done.” the blond said eventually, pulling away and getting to his feet. The dagger had somehow found its way into his hand during Terra’s tale and he let it clatter to the floor noisily. “Does this mean you won’t kill him?” Chance raised his head to look Terra in the eye, standing up straight and pulling back his shoulders. He was feeling emotions for the first time in centuries, but he wouldn’t let the other see him cry, not anymore. He said no words, just gave the other a lingering look before a dark portal suddenly appeared behind him and he stepped back into it, disappearing in the blink of an eye. Terra sunk to the floor slowly after Chance had left, his heart aching in his chest, remembering the blond for how he used to be, instead of the heartless individual he became. It seemed that death had taught Chance a thing or two and he left behind the most selfless deed he could ever imagine- life.
